Honduras Problem Doesn't Get Better

Here is Mary Anastasia O'Grady writing in The Wall Street Journal. Her article is titled "Honduras at the Tipping Point" and the subtitle is "Why is the U.S. not supporting the rule of law?"

Good question.

It is helpful to recognize that this isn't just about Honduras, but about Venezuela and about Venezuela's relationship with Iran and the whole drug issue.♠

Maybe there is a secret plan down in DC to solve this problem and not give a victory to Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.  Maybe after SecState Clinton's meeting with ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya she will then broker a deal where Mr Zelaya goes into exile and we recommend that the Organization of American States recognize the democratic aspirations of the People of Honduras.

I have my fingers crossed.

  1. This is kinda like taking sides in someone else's marital spat--the only thing the two sides will likely remember after it's settled is that you stuck your nose where it didn't belong.

As I see it, all parties appear guilty of breaking one law or another, and the choice breaks down to being between absolving a chief executive for illegal acts, vs the legislature and supreme court for resorting to an extra-legal response.

The political naivete of the Honduran court and legislature to think they could just kidnap their problem and send it to Costa Rica is matched only by the bumbling Obama administration's broadcast of an opinion before knowing the facts. I don't know much about global diplomacy, but I do know that cornering yourself into a position you never had to take so soon is a wrong move.

  2. Cliff,

In answer to your question about whether we're winning the Long War on Drugs, this reader gives an emphatic "No way."

Your mention of that reminded me of something I've been meaning to say about the marijuana ballot initiative from last November...remember all those dire predictions about how the sky would fall?

That law has been in place for more than half a year now, and I don't see the public disorder and decay that some said would result..

    best,
