Joe Biden Said What?

There is a thing called the "Levenshtein Distance", named after Vladimir Levenshtein, a Russian scientist who did research in information theory and error-correcting codes.

How does this come up?  It was a term used in a Blog that is tracking Bidenisms.

The Levenshtein Distance is described in Wikipedia:
The Levenshtein distance between two strings is given by the minimum number of operations needed to transform one string into the other, where an operation is an insertion, deletion, or substitution of a single character. A generalization of the Levenshtein distance (Damerau–Levenshtein distance) allows the transposition of two characters as an operation. Some Translation Environment Tools, such as translation memory leveraging applications, use the Levenhstein algorithm to measure the edit distance between two fuzzy matching content segments.
Got that?

What I don't know about computer languages would fill the Pacific Ocean.

Where it applies in the referenced blog is that it is a way of computing how close a Joseph Biden quote is to a Neil Kinnock quote.  Or, in the words of the Joe Biden Said That? Blog:
What's the Levenshtein distance on that one? Not much.

  1. Not since Dan Quayle have we had a man of such malapropriate ineloquence over at the Naval Observatory. What I'd like to understand is why each have only succeeded in terrifying the "other" party's half of the electorate? This guy needs a muzzle or an impeachment--likely both.
