America's Catholic bishops pulled a shocker today in picking their new president, disregarding tradition and precedent by rejecting its vice-president and instead choosing a man seen as more outspoken and conservative.Yes, a "shocker", but how conservative can New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan be, given that on 9 November of this year he was down at St Joseph's Church, in Greenwich Village, celebrating Dorothy Day's birthday and talking about what she represented.
That is my kind of "conservative".
Dorothy Day, who founded the Catholic Worker Movement. Challenge yourself and get yourself a subscription to The Catholic Worker newspaper.♠
The Catholic Worker newspaper is not online. Subscription or copy requests must be sent by regular mail to The Catholic Worker, 36 East First Street, New York, NY 10003, United States. Phone: 212-777-9617. The newspaper was started by Dorothy Day herself in New York City in the 1930s'. The price has been and will remain a penny a copy, excluding mailing costs. It is issued seven times per year and a year's subscription is available for 25 cents (30 cents for foreign subscriptions), though all donations in excess of that amount go to the hospitality houses associated with the paper, Maryhouse and St. Joseph House. You can afford it. It isn't like the cost of The Globe, or it's parent The New York Times, or our local paper of record, The Sun.

♠ For a certain number of the blog readers, I can front you the money, if you ask.
I hope you were refering to John.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't referring to you. You are covered and I hope you find it a stimulating read. Remember, Dorothy Day was your Mother's favorite living saint.
ReplyDeleteAt the current prices, I can cover someone for four years for a buck. Not everyone, but a few. And, I think John is also already covered.

The tough things to remember and reconcile as Catholics is that Dorthy Day is as authentic a Catholic as Saint Paul (see II Thessalonians 3:10).
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I get the drift of the Other Cliff. I don't think that Dorothy Day was into letting folks lay about. And, it is too late and I am too tired to try a back channel query.
ReplyDeleteThe operation in New York City had a farm somewhere, I want to say up state, but it might have been Staten Island, back in the day. I don't believe distributionist is the same as socialist.
But, it is true that Catholicism is a big tent and holds both Dorothy Day and Paul of Tarsus.
