Here is a discussion of the one-child rules in China. One of the things China has done is go after those who are having more than one child.
It brings to mind the Slaughter of the Innocents. Their Feast Day is 28 December (27 December in some Eastern Rite Churches)
A forced abortion or a coerced abortion is not a pretty thing from a human rights point of view and is definitely not "pro choice".
And, world population is going to peak soon and then we can listen to people telling us about the tragedy of a falling global population.

I'm glad to share the burdens associated to underpopulation versus the alternative.
ReplyDeleteWord of caution, if we don't manage consumption properly, less humans won't make as much of a difference.
Let's also make sure we're talking about something unprecedented in human history -- a large society with 120 marriage-age males for every 100 marriage-age females (China may not quite be there yet, but that's what's on the horizon).
ReplyDeleteWealthy Chinese males will be okay, because they'll have options both "in country" and in the near abroad.
But what about everybody else? The math's just not going to work.
Worry not for Chinese men. The wealthy will find brides abroad, partially balancing out the domestic shortage.
ReplyDeleteFurther, should the disparity sustain, the Catholic Church will quickly move it's recruiting efforts East.
Equilibrium happens.
