What does Martin Luther King Day mean to us, besides a day off?♠
Signed into law on 2 November 1983, it was first observed on 20 January 1986.
Holidays are important just for the breaks they give us. In the UK there are Bank Holidays, originally four and now a generic term for a lot of holidays. Europe is big on holidays.
For me, this day is a reminder to think about how change in our nation comes about when the citizens come to realize that something needs to change. The Reverend King was part of the process for bringing about the end of legal segregation. That, of and in itself, was important for us to move forward and better employ the skills and insights of all of our citizens. Of course it isn't perfect progress, because man isn't perfect. There was no perfect time in the past. However, there is a sense that things have gotten better for human beings because we were prepared to listen to our fellow citizens and change.

♠ I will be working, since we have this proposal to get out the door. Probably ten or twelve hours.
