Here is a flyer for a meeting on the idea of a Little Cambodia. This is an organizing meeting and a chance to get in on the ground floor. Often people think that things are already "wired" but that is not always the case. Often organizers are desperate to get folks who will help out. Help out initially and then move up the rungs of the ladder of City Government, if you wish.
The city will make a presentation on the plan for a Little Cambodia district in the Lower Highlands neighborhood, and take questions and suggestions from both the area businesses and the wider community. One of those pushing this is City Councilor Patrick Murphy and he noted to me and others that he understands it is a difficult time for many, but it was the best time for business owners in the area to be able to participate.
So, look for a chance to participate.

It puzzles me that self-proclaimed Republicans such as yourself and in today's Sun - Mr. Buba - see this as a positive move .It seems to be against everything the GOP stands for .
ReplyDelete1.Central planning failed and not just in the Sobiet Union . Downtown Lowell has had an alphabet soup of public entites bringing it back to life for nearly 35 years and they have not succeeded .
2. The very bureaucrats who gave us the Parfumerie and similar fiascos now are to teach successful businessmen who are keeping their doors open in a bad economy in the Lower Highlands "best practices".
3.The City Manager sees this as bringing tourists to gawk at the Other .Those businesses serve local residents and are not seeking so far as I can tell to become Disneyland .
4.The unstated goal may well be to create a rationale for segregation -the Cambodians do not need to open businesses anywhere else now that they have their own ghetto .This is not mere paranoia:no Khmer businessmen are on the Lowell Plan or the Chamber of Commerce board etc.Even the Sun noticed the lack of diversity on the City Boards.
5.A Tea Party Sceptic might see the drive by the bureaucrats to justify their continued employment . They need to be "helping " someone to stay on the public payroll.
