“It was weird to sit down at a table read with the actresses playing Tony’s girlfriends. Occasionally I would get a sharp twinge at the back of my neck,”What does she mean by "read"?
I will buy lunch (my choice of venue, day and time negotiable) for the person who comes closest to my understanding of the meaning.

I think 'read' should be 'reading'
ReplyDeleteRe Anonymous, I don't think so, but thanks for playing.

A table read is when an actor, or group of actors sits (literally) at a table (in many cases)script in hand, and reads through a scene or series of scenes in order to integrate the spoken dialogue and fine tune inflection, volume, tone, etc.
ReplyDeleteA "read" is done when the actors sit at a table and "read aoud" the script. It is done to give them the chance to get familar with the dialogue and it gives the writers a chance to make edits and rewrites depending on the flow and actors impute.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought it was about clearing the table, as in, "Sally, read the table".
ReplyDeleteI think Neal beat Gerry, but when I set up the lunch date I will notify Gerry.
