Chicago Tribune reporters John Chase and Jeff Coen, in their recently released book Golden, claim that former U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald lied when he said he did not know who was leaking information to the Trib about the Rod Blagojevich investigation being conducted by his office. If Messrs Chase and Coen are correct, is it now worth while to question the prosecution of I Lewis Libby?
Hat tip to the InstaPundit.

You're joking, right?
ReplyDeleteActually, no. If the Federal Attorney can't deal with "Rod" in a straight forward and honest manner, how can we believe he was honest in his dealings with Scooter Libby. I want Federal justice to be even handed. For me it isn't the number of coup on the wall, but the belief by all that they will get a fair shake, even Whitey's ex-girlfriends.

If I run a stop light, but stop for multiple others, do they revoke my license?
ReplyDeleteFirst, a couple of reporters are not a jury, unless we seek amends in the court of public opinion. Historically, a couple of reporters,e.g. Woodward & Bernstien, can topple those at the highest office. So, they can instigate justice.
What has always bugged me is that the defense attorney has so many trick cards that a prosecutor cannot use. Imagine the Celtics facing the Lakers and the Lakers also have the Harlem Globe Trotters on the floor, at the same time.
However, I think, like when Scooter's boss authorized torture; America, through its institutions, should take the high road.
We, rightfully, give an edge to the defense attorney. But, we allow the police and the prosecutor to lie but criminalize the accused for lying.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the line, "better 10 guilty go free than 1 innocent man be convicted"? Some Englishman. Blackstone. And Abraham, but he had a more just audience for his argument.
I am just asking for higher standards. I put trust in the rulings of Judge Mark Wolf because I trust his integrity. Our own AG, not so much, although TW would dispute that with me, I expect.
