Clearly the timing of the event is significant. Whether it's part of the ongoing strife between the Salafis and the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), and intended to embarrass Egypt's MB president is unclear at present. But taken in context, today's episode probably doesn't have all that much to do with a movie, or what the mob may or may not perceive as hate speech. As Dead Carl♠ tells us, first reports are usually wrong. Here is one person's take:
At this point we don't even know to what extent, if any, Mr Jones was involved in the production of the film. As far as I can tell, the reports claiming that he was involved or allegedly involved are all sourced back to one Egyptian media outlet, Al Youm al-Sabaa, citing one Dr. Effat Sadat, Anwar Sadat's nephew and now president of the Egypt National party—and is a relative nobody in Egyptian politics. It seems like jumping the gun to criticize Jones on this slim a premise. So, it is possible that a focus on Rev Jones is missing the point. The situation on the ground in Egypt may have little to do with Rev Jones. It may have a lot to do with internal Egyptian politics.

There was a tinder box and Rev. Jones threw a match.
ReplyDeleteIf that match missed, it was picked up by another religious fanatic that ensured the conflagration ignited.
Tag team zealots.
The Cold War worked because we had nation states that did NOT want mutual self destruction. That good sense served us trough crisis, like the Cuban Missle Crisis.
Rev. Jones and his "accomplice" have no compunction, whatsoever.
The topic is discussed here on a Morning Joe episode.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is that Mika is absent. The bad news, so is Joe.
