Managing the Sahara Desert

If you put the federal government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in 5 years there'd be a shortage of sand.
- Milton Friedman

Probably over the top, but perhaps basically sound.

  1. I'm assuming you support privatizing NORAD?

There is a 'goldilocks zone' between big gubmint & drowning it in a bath tub. Every congresscritters wails about waste, fraud and abuse in someone else's District. But, they love the gov't teat. Even military retirees do. As do, gov't contractors.

So, Mr. Friedman should STFU. He was on the dole, himself.

What is best about gov't is what is worst about it. It lives and dies by popular demand. Usually, it's response time is 10 years behind the fad.

  2. Working as an Economist for the Government is LIKE being on the dole, but isn't being on the dole.

I think it is fair to say you can be in the eye of the storm and still recognize it as a storm.

Look at that known right wing lunatic, Ambassador Daniel P. Moynihan.  He recognized the problems with the LBJ/RMN welfare reform effort and how it was moving us off in a somewhat bad direction while trying to solve some serious problems that needed solving.

I agree that sometimes the government needs to work the Sahara Desert issue, but when there starts to be a shortage of sand, it is time to switch up.  It is like how a factor contributing to the Arab Spring, and what has followed, flows from the decision to make the world better by subsidizing corn production to create biofuel.
