I have recollections of Soviet bombers riding the ADIZ requiring ADC to launch interceptors. What often ensued speaks to the level of animosity that exists at the state vs individual level. One particularly vivid story is one that features a Bear crewman sitting in a side blister holding up a picture of his family, pointing to it and smiling broadly. Not to be outdone, the F-106 driver reciprocated. Then photographs were taken with appropriate friendly posing, after which, the Bear turned to the right and flew out into the great expanse of the Pacific. The F-106 turned left and RTB.
One must ask, is our enemy....the one we actually deal with at a personal level, full of hate....or fear?
