Burning Your Boats

For John, BLUFI can see the possibility of a reorientation, with the elites going to the Democrat Party and the rest of us drifting Republican.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From the OpEd Page of The New York Times we have Mr David Brooks crying out, "It’s Not Too Late!".  This is from Tuesday, 8 March 2016.

Here are the last three paragraphs:

If the G.O.P. is going to survive as a decent and viable national party, it can’t cling to the fading orthodoxy Cruz represents.  But it can’t shift to ugly Trumpian nationalism, either.  It has to find a third alternative:  limited but energetic use of government to expand mobility and widen openness and opportunity.  That is what Kasich, Rubio, Paul Ryan and others are stumbling toward.

Amid all the vulgarity and pettiness, that is what is being fought over this month: going back to the past, veering into an ugly future, or finding a third way.  This is something worth fighting for, worth burning the boats behind you for.

The hour is late and the odds may be long. But there is still hope.  It’s a moment for audacity, not settling for Ted Cruz simply because he’s the Titanic you know.

Burning your boats is a tactic from Ancient Greece, wherein the Army lands on a shore and to ensure total commitment to the coming battle burn their boats so as to preclude retreat.

Let us be clear here.  The Bien-pensant have become unmoored.

And, people like Mr David Brooks are not listening to the People.  In fact, they have become scared of the People.  They have condemned the supporters of Trump as "Low Information Voters".

Hat tip to Ann Althouse.

Which is funny, in that this is a Rush Limbaugh line, referring to Democrats and Democrat leaning Independents.
Professor Althouse blogged this because of Mr Brooks use of the term Oleaginous to refer to Senator Ted Cruz.  Oily.  Mr Brooks doesn't like either Mr Trump or Senator Cruz.
