The last time you had to sit through a training program, you probably thought you were just wasting your time. You were wrong: Research suggests that efforts to raise awareness and train employees about sexual harassment may be worse than a waste. They may actually lead to more tolerance for sexual harassment, as well as greater reliance on stereotypes and more animosity between the sexes.This includes research from Stanford.
My recollection from 1973 and Equal Opportunity training at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base is that it didn't engender sympathy or understanding. Although I would not say it made things worse.
But, it does suggest there is an industry out there that claims to be helping, but isn't.
Better behavior is a leadership thing. The leader models it and that motivates the followers to implement.
Racial prejudice and sexual harassment are too important to be left to a team of traveling briefers. It calls for leadership.
