The Drug War and Its Problems

This is a month old, but still interesting, as it raises a lot of questions about how the US Government does business in the international arena and about our understanding of reciprocity.

In its longer range implications we should ask ourselves how we might translate our willingness to conduct drone operations into the sovereign state of Pakistan into Spanish.  For example, will we feel free, at some point, to conduct drone attacks into Mexico in dealing with narco-terrorists?  You do think that as the drug war escalates and the drug cartels begin operating in our border states, that we should feel free to dip into Mexico in hot pursuit, just as we did with Pancho Villa, almost a century ago?

The flip side of that is even more interesting.  What if Mexico wants to pursue the bad guys into the US?

First a very major point. The drug cartels ALREADY operate in our border states....a fact that the border states have complained about vocally for some time...and the Federal government denies or minimizes to avoid angering the latino community in a coming election year.

The matter of hot pursuit and or tactical strikes is easy to settle. First, we simply advise Mexico that elements of the drug cartels/trade who cross onto sovereign US soil will be pursued and arrested. Should those elements attempt to jump back across the border during that pursuit, American LE personnel will pursue them into Mexican territory. We invite the Mexican authorities to join us in those pursuits. Should Mexico desire to formalize that approach, we can jointly develop and secure quick approval for explicit ROE and a foundational SOFA.

The failures of the US to stem the tide at the border are attributable ONLY to the lack of political will to do so.

Evidence of our bumbling political approach and sheer Federal incompetence to solve the problem can be neatly summarized by Fast and Furious and the associated deaths from the US governments failure to do its job.

Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano should be indicted and tried for lying, failure to act in the best interests of the safety and security of the nation, accomplice to murder, and other charges.
