Who is Worthy?

For John, BLUFThe past is, for some, a risk strewn territory.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

"Overthrow" in an Electorial manner.

From The New Hampshire Union Leader, by Reporter Paul Feely, 14 October 2018.

Here is the lede plus one:

Fresh off his first appearance of the season as President Trump on “Saturday Night Live,” actor Alec Baldwin headlined the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s inaugural Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner Sunday night at the Manchester Downtown Hotel.

“The way we implement change in America is through elections,” Baldwin said. “In that orderly way, we need to overthrow the government of the United States under Donald Trump. Not in a violent, awful way, but it must be overthrown nonetheless. Let’s make America great again, by making Donald Trump a casino operator again.”

I thought the name Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner sounded a little odd,  It turns out "Presentism" is narrowing the name choices.  Some former Democratic Party Presidents are no longer acceptable in polite company.  From the article:
Sunday’s event was previously known as the “Jefferson-Jackson Dinner” before being switched in 2016 to the “Kennedy-Clinton Dinner.”  The national controversy over sexual harassment fueled by the “#MeToo” movement earlier this year prompted the name change.
I worry about the Dems if they don't see their "Blue Wave" come 6 November.

On the other hand, I worry about our Nation if they do.

Good Bye Laura Ingalls Wilder

For John, BLUFThe past is a bog in which we can be trapped and killed.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

American Library Association changes award name after examining ‘expressions of stereotypical attitudes’ in books

From The Guardian, by the Associated Press in Chicago, 24 June 2018.

At some level I don't care.  I didn't read the Little House on the Prairie series.  I read My Ántonia in school.  But, maybe it wasn't a real children's book, what with the burial of the suicide at the crossroads discussion.

This is why we need to be careful about naming public buildings and the like after living people.  When we are digging up the dead and desecrating their graves in the name of Presentism, how much more risky is commemorating the living?

Erik Prince Grilled

For John, BLUFMaybe it isn't presentism, but this view that Messrs Trump and Putin are the most evil ever is a little off the mark.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

The Trumpworld insider is under scrutiny for his alleged backchanneling with Russia, his work for China, and his plans for Afghanistan.  He defends it all in a new interview.

From The Daily Beast, by Ms Betsy Woodruff, 11 June 2018.

A comment attributed to Mr Erik Prince:

As I've said before, if Franklin Roosevelt can work with Joseph Stalin to defeat German fascism, Nazi fascism, national socialist fascism, then certainly Donald Trump can work with Putin to defeat Islamic fascism.
It is more than this quote, and an interesting read.

I have to admit that between Putin and Stalin, I see Joseph Stalin as, by far, the more evil leader.

Presentism

For John, BLUFLet us not apply our moral standards to our forefathers and mothers.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From Wikipedia
In literary and historical analysis, presentism is the anachronistic introduction of present-day ideas and perspectives into depictions or interpretations of the past.  Some modern historians seek to avoid presentism in their work because they consider it a form of cultural bias, and believe it creates a distorted understanding of their subject matter.  The practice of presentism is regarded by some as a common fallacy in historical writing.

Welcome Asser Levy

TRIGGER WARNINGS:  No one is safe, once the mob tastes blood.

For John, BLUFWe really should calm down and not let "presentism" warp our historic view.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The New York Post, by Reporters Yoav Gonen and Ruth Brown, on 24 August.

Here is the lede plus two:

Move over Christopher Columbus, it’s Peter Stuyvesant’s turn to get scorched in the monuments war.

A Jewish activist group is now demanding Mayor de Blasio scrub all traces of the anti-Semitic Dutch governor from city property — even Stuyvesant High School — as part of his campaign to rid the city of “symbols or hate.”

“Peter Stuyvesant was an extreme racist who targeted Jews and other minorities including Catholics and energetically tried to prohibit them from settling in then New Amsterdam,” said Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the head of the Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center.

He is not wrong about Mr Peter Stuyvesant.

So, they want to replace Governor Peter Stuyvesant with Asser Levy, the first Jew to own a house in North America.
