From the publication Inside Higher Education we have news of activities down county.  "Harvard Law Seeks to Change Seal".

Here is the Harvard Law School seal along with the markup by those wishing to have it changed for its indications of a racist past.  The focus seems to be an organization calling itself Reclaim Harvard Law.

Here is the lede from the article from Inside Higher Education, from this morning:

Martha Minow, dean of the Harvard University law school, has endorsed the recommendations of a panel she appointed to change the law school's seal, a major demand of minority students and others. The seal (visible at right in a logo used by the student group) shows three bundles of wheat. Students say the seal is inappropriate because it was the family seal of Isaac Royall Jr., who was honored as a major early donor to the law school but was also involved with the slave trade in the 18th century.

From my time in the Air Force I have seen these things come and go.  As a Squadron Commander in Alaska I had to go through a formal process to get our Squadron Patch recognized by the Air Force (someone, previous to my tenure, had changed it to better reflect who we were).  I remember when the designation of the Wing at Sembach Air Base, in Germany,♠ was changed to the 66th.♥  It involved changing the patch to remove what looked like a marijuana leaf.

OK, so unit patches come and go, even for ancient organizations.  And not so ancient organizations, such as Harvard Law School.  The logo needs to serve the needs of the current members.

That part of the story is pretty mundane.  What is interesting is if there is sufficient shame in having accepted the original contributions from Mr Isaac Royall, Jr, for the Harvard Law School to return the donation to the rightful heirs.♦  With Interest.

That would show real contrition.

I wonder what Harvard Law School Professor E Warren thinks?

From Ms Shoshana Weissmann and The Weekly Standard we have Biden Apologizes to Mexico for GOP Comments.

From the beginning of the article:

CNN reports that on Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden spoke in Mexico City and "came close to offering an apology for comments made by Republicans about Mexico and Mexican immigrants on the campaign trail."

I almost feel obliged to apologize for some of what my political colleagues said," Biden said alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.  "It's a heated campaign season and I just want you to know, Mr. President, that the most heated rhetoric you've heard from competitors for the nomination for president is not who we are as the American people.  It is not the view that is the view of the majority of the Acan people. It's the exact opposite. It's the opposite view.

But in 2007, Biden called Mexico a "dysfunctional society."

So, having learned from the guy from Steam City, I hearby apologize to the Citizens of Canada, Cuba and Mexico, and Economic Immigrants enroute through those nations, for any comments by our current Vice President, who is a worthy successor to Alexander Throttlebottom.

It Seems So Simple

For John, BLUF:  Yes, you can film Police doing their duty.  even in Fall River.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

"Fall River Man Arrested For Videotaping Police Officer".  The man, apparently on his front porch, was videoing a police officer on a paid detail.  So reports CBS Local Channel 8.  Also reported is that the video phone was confiscated and the video deleted.

Assuming the news report is pretty close to correct, I suggest the following two points:

First, the Mayor, Mr Willam A Flanagan, needs to invite the Chief of Police, Mr Daniel Racine, up to his office and privately explain to him how the cow ate the cabbage.  By now it should be a common place that a citizen can videotape the police.  Then the two city officials need to agree on the kind of deal to cut with the man videotaping from his front porch (that is to say, a US Citizen).

Second, the man on his front porch should be offered a formal public apology by both the Chief of Police and the Police Officer and $500 for the loss of his phone and videos (to be paid for by the City, not the Police Officer).♠
