Mr Morrissey's piece would make a good basis for a broad ranging discussion of the various equities involved in this issue. One interesting point he cites is a 2009 CDC Report:
Contraceptive use in the United States is virtually universal among women of reproductive age: 99 percent of all women who had ever had intercourse had used at least one contraceptive method in their lifetime. This suggests the Adminstration is either using a scatter gun to deal with a pinpoint problem or is doing policy without a grounding in reality or is picking a fight.

They are picking a fight. Why? Because it is one they will win.
ReplyDeleteAt least they think so.

Odd thing is, Cliff. Most women like control of their own bodies. They are funny like that.
ReplyDeleteOf course they do, as do men. The question is, what are the limits of that control? This will come up in November in a different form—a ballot initiative on the right to terminate one's own life. The underlying question is, what do men and women owe society.
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is that in the Republican Field, George S notwithstanding, the right of men and women to use various forms of birth control is not in question. Senator Rick Santorum was on Greta last night, making that point.
There is a sticking point, however, when the question is about terminating human life. And that leads to the question of when human life begins. I, for one, totally reject the Professor Peter Singer approach.

I'm not arguing the "life" point. Killing is a part of living. Explain to me how you can live without killing a living thing? Yes. We will get stuck arguing degrees. I assume you value humanity above all else? You must.
ReplyDeleteThere is this notion of the fetus being separate from the mother. It's not riding piggyback, Cliff.
We should definately take care not to kill one another with abandon. There is a societal cost to that. Not sure if it is more or less than the cost of mandating life?
Somewhere there is a steer reading this blog, thinking, "This is udder BS, yo!"
