Hitting Back

I believe that some think that covert action will suffice in dealing with Iran and its nuclear program.  Perhaps.  On the other hand, Iran seems to have a long reach and a willingness to pay back for what it sees as "terrorist" attacks in its own nation and people.

We should not believe that we can conduct covert actions against Iran and come out scott free.  In fact, if our friends conduct covert actions against Iran, we might find ourselves suffering some of the retaliation.

And, Iran has recently made threats.

This is not to say that attacks on US Citizens should go unpunished.  It is to say that there is no free lunch.

  1. This is THE toughest foreign policy issue on the plate, and I say that because I'm still waiting for someone to come up with the right answers, but not holding my breath.

I wonder if Iran assesses that the US doesn't have the stomach right now to embark on yet ANOTHER war in the region, so feels like they have a somewhat free hand to play.

If we keep going tit-for-tat, though, it seems like they would wind up being the loser because we're the ones who pose an existential threat to their regime.

This is not easy. I don't think President Obama has the right answers on Iran, but then again I certainly don't think Messrs. Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum do, either.

  2. Walk softly.....but carry one very, very big stick......and the willingness to use it. Iran...or any other nation on earth should have to realize that an attack on the US will mean a whole lot more than a tit for a tat. It will mark the end of their existence....period.

You don't ever win a war from a position of equality. You win it by being far superior.

What the POTUS, the Congress, and most of American people lack is the guts to be tough and uncompromising. As they once said in the AF (no longer PC...) "No guts...no Air Medal."

  3. The right answer require us to be honest with what Iran is to us, and not to Israel.

We can't get the right answer because we are not being given the truth.

  5. The TRUTH is for us, as Citizens and Voters, to winkle out, not for some oracle to give us.  There will be different understandings of the truth, which is why we vote.  At the end of the day it is on us to know the truth, not on elected officials or appointed bureaucrats to tell us the truth.  Thus, blogging.
