Slow Break

For John, BLUFI do not do Twitter, and quote it sparingly, but I was interested in Former President Trumps new Social Media Application.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Truth Social

The problem is, this APP requires iPhone IOS 13.  My iPhone IOS is 12.5.5, and will never be upgrading to 13.  Unless the APP developers go back and provide a modified version, I will not be there.

Mr Devin Nunes, please take note.

J'accuse

For John, BLUFIt is funny how bureaucracies, of any sort, once locked in, are unable to admit they made a mistake.  Even the Louisiana State Police are unable, all these years later, are unable to admit they are the ones who shot Senator Huey P Long.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The New Neo, 11 December 2019.

Here is the lede plus one:

Remember back in the early days of 2018 when there was the clash of the dueling memos on Russiagate and the role of the FBI and the FISA court applications?  The Nunes memo was criticized by Democrats even before it was released, and afterwards Adam Schiff released his own memo that contested what Nunes had asserted.

And of course the MSM trashed Nunes (for example:  the memo is “a joke and a sham”) and lauded Schiff.  Now we have the Horowitz Report that represents an examination of some of the same facts that Nunes and Schiff were duking it out over, and Nunes is completely vindicated and Schiff should slink away in shame along with most of the MSM.

When I think of Russiagate it reminds me of l'affaire Dreyfus, with perhaps Rep David Nunes in the role of Journalist Émile Zola.

So what roles do Rep Adam Schiff and former FBI Director James Comey play?

Nadler Is Incompetent?

For John, BLUFThat would be US Representative Jerry Nadler, Democrat from New York and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The Washington Examiner, by Columnist Byron York, 31 October 2019.

The House resolution to start an Impeachment inquiry has passed, 232 to 196, with 4 not voting.  Here is an excerpt from the column:

"It says they are authorized to disclose depositions," Meadows noted, "which means they can pick and choose which depositions they will release."  Perhaps Schiff will release them all.  But he doesn't have to.

The resolution would also give Schiff the authority to call and conduct public hearings on impeachment.  Schiff will control the witnesses.  Although there has been some discussion about whether Republicans will have the right to call witnesses, the resolution only gives the ranking Republican on the Intelligence Community, Rep. Devin Nunes, the right to ask Schiff to call a witness.

"To allow for full evaluation of minority witness requests, the ranking minority member may submit to the chair, in writing, any requests for witness testimony relevant to the investigation," the resolution says.  "Any such request shall be accompanied by a detailed written justification of the relevance of the testimony of each requested witnesses to the investigation."  Republicans will get nothing that Schiff does not approve.

"There's no guarantee we can call any witnesses," said Republican Rep. Brad Wenstrup, a member of the Intelligence Committee, in an interview Wednesday.

"The rules the Democrats rammed through simply confirm the absolute control Schiff has been exercising this entire time," Nunes said.  "He shouldn't be involved in impeachment at all since none of this has any intelligence component, but Pelosi obviously thinks Nadler is incompetent."

That was a reference to Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.  The Judiciary panel traditionally handles impeachments, but after disastrous hearings with Robert Mueller and Corey Lewandowski, Nadler did not inspire confidence that he could run a successful impeachment effort.  So Pelosi passed him by in favor of Schiff.

We are off to the races.  I hope there are no major miscalculations by any of the parties.

For sure, to me, this looks like an effort to undo the 2016 election, the one Ms Clinton lost, due to over confidence.  That is sad.  Andy Jackson though he was rooked out of the Presidency in 1824, but his approach was to win big in 1828.

Diogenes Out There?

For John, BLUFPeople are just going wacko over this whole Trump issue.  So, will we ever learn the truth?  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

Nunes says DOJ, FBI betting on Dems killing probe

From The Washington Free Beacon, by Reporter Adam Kredo, 17 July 2018.

Here is the lede:

The chair of the House Intelligence Committee accused the FBI and Department of Justice of stonewalling a sprawling investigation into claims the Trump campaign colluded with Russia with the hope of running out the clock until the November elections, when they anticipate Democrats will regain control of the House and dissolve an ongoing probe that has uncovered evidence U.S. officials sought to cripple Trump's campaign.
While I am doubtful of the Democrats winning either House in November, absent the Special Counsel dropping some unethical "October Surprise".  At the same time, I don't see the value in accusing the Democratic Party Leadership higher level Civil Servants of playing fast and loose with US security and the integrity of our electoral process.  I would expect better of Representative Nunes.

A Spy in the Other Guy's Camp

For John, BLUFI expect a lot of institutional protecting tocome out of this.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The Wall Street Journal, by Reporter Kimberley A. Strassel (Kim.Strassel@wsj.com), 10 May 2018.

Here is the lede plus three:

The Department of Justice lost its latest battle with Congress Thursday when it agreed to brief House Intelligence Committee members about a top-secret intelligence source that was part of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign.  Even without official confirmation of that source’s name, the news so far holds some stunning implications.

Among them is that the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation outright hid critical information from a congressional investigation.  In a Thursday press conference, Speaker Paul Ryan bluntly noted that Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’s request for details on this secret source was “wholly appropriate,” “completely within the scope” of the committee’s long-running FBI investigation, and “something that probably should have been answered a while ago.”  Translation:  The department knew full well it should have turned this material over to congressional investigators last year, but instead deliberately concealed it.

House investigators nonetheless sniffed out a name, and Mr. Nunes in recent weeks issued a letter and a subpoena demanding more details.  Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s response was to double down—accusing the House of “extortion” and delivering a speech in which he claimed that “declining to open the FBI’s files to review” is a constitutional “duty.”  Justice asked the White House to back its stonewall.  And it even began spinning that daddy of all superspook arguments—that revealing any detail about this particular asset could result in “loss of human lives.”

This is desperation, and it strongly suggests that whatever is in these files is going to prove very uncomfortable to the FBI.

If true, thus won't end well.

As to "extortion", I think it would be if Congress exercised its Constitutional prerogative and cut the FBI (and Main Justice) budgets by 15%.  That might get someone's attention and create a window for more open Federal Government.

Blind Rage?

For John, BLUFI thought the trope about Governor Howard Dean being wacko was unfair.  Now I am not so sure.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From Pajama Media and Reporter Debra Heine, 20 February 2018.

Here is the lede plus one:

President Trump recently praised House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes as a “Great American Hero” for the work he's done to expose deep state corruption, but former Vermont governor and 2004 presidential screamer Howard Dean begs to differ.

Dean on Sunday told MSNBC host Alex Witt that he suspects Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) “belongs in jail," arguing that Nunes doesn't put the country first like former President Obama did.

Right!

And it didn't help his thesis to drag former President Obama into this.

Why?

For John, BLUFThe animosity we see amongst California Reps to Congress seems well out of proportion to the situation.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Why do Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff seem to hate Representative Devin Nunes so much?

Up in the San Francisco area is Representative Nancy Pelosi, of California's 12th congressional district.  The 12th is contained within the City of San Francisco.

Down in the LA area we have Congressman Adam Schiff, of California's 28th congressional district.  Places like Burbank, Glendale, the Verdugo Hills communities of Sunland and Tujunga, West Hollywood as well as parts of central Los Angeles including Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake and Little Armenia.

And we have, in the middle, Congressman Devin Nunes, of California's 22nd congressional district.  The 22nd congressional district is centered in the San Joaquin Valley, in Fresno and Tulare counties. The district includes most of eastern Fresno, as well as all of Clovis, Tulare, and Visalia.

The easy answer is that Ms Pelosi and Mr Schiff are Democrats and Mr Nunes is a Republican.  Implacable opposition to President Trump.  Never Trump!

Maybe it is because Ms Pelosi and Mr Schiff are what Lowellians call "blow ins", while Mr Nunes is that rare animal, a born and bred Californian.

But, maybe it is economics, with Ms Pelosi and Mr Schiff being from "lily pad" Democratic Party urban areas and Mr Nunes being from a farming community area.  Urban vs Rural.

Northern California Region (dark green) / Northern Sacramento Valley Region (Light Green) / Greater Sacramento (yellow) / Bay Area (Red) / Central Coast (orange) / San Joaquin Valley Region (green) / Central Sierra Region (brown) / Southern California Region (light blue) / Southern Border Region (purple)

On the other hand, it could be that Ms Pelosi and Mr Schiff represent areas with low religious affinity and Mr Nunes represents an area with high religious affinity.  The big green and brown blob half way up the state of California.

Whatever it is, there isn't much love lost here.
