Back to Something Lighter

Here is a video of a Swiss Air Force Hawker Hunter flying through the Alps.

Those in a position to know suggest that the Hunter is a great subsonic fighter.

Caution, this video has sound--a chorus chanting in Latin.

Why do you suppose the Swiss would go with a subsonic fighter? Who do they think they are going to be fighting? If not their neighbors, then it will have to be someone who has defeated their neighbors. Either ways, it will be someone with a superior supersonic fighter. Perhaps they think they can keep the combat down in the mountains, but even the tallest mountain there, Mont Blanc, is under 16,000 feet, so there is a lot of air above it.

I think that this is a case of them buying it early and deciding that they liked it and that it was very maneuverable in the mountains.  Thus, it is probably a good air-to-ground machine. They started picking them up in 1958 and kept using them until 1994.  The Brits moved it from air-to-air to air-to-ground in 63.  Heck, I was still a cadet in 63.
