In fact I believe that service in the Army at least is proportionately more valuable to females than males simply because our culture rewards males with leadership opportunities earlier in their careers and too often women fall into the administration groove and are given few opportunities to lead.I think there is some sound career guidance for parents, looking to guide their children.
We should be careful of stereotypes. My youngest son and his wife are currently home schooling their children. However, I am not allowed to buy their four year old daughter "girl" toys. A Lego helicopter earlier this week was very acceptable. I was glad to oblige.

AGender neutral toys lead to more creative play. Social cues of what is a boy or girl color hit my five year old son. His favorite color has been purple. On Ash Wednesday, when the Church was decorated for Lent he told me black was his new favorite. Because it was more boyish.
I have to admit I like his choice. Mine too. It is good to know you are not alone. :-)
