Policing is Dangerous

For John, BLUF:  The Police need our support, but also our expectations of professional performance.

Two New York City Plainclothes Police Officers were shot in the Bronx last night.  This is one more indication that policing is a dangerous profession.  Here is the article, in The New York Times, by Reporters Emma G Fitzsimmons and Benjamin Mueller.

Two plainclothes New York City police officers were shot in the Bronx on Monday night while they were investigating an armed robbery at a grocery store, the police said.

A 30-year-old officer who was shot in the lower back and arm was in critical but stable condition early Tuesday, the police said. A 38-year-old officer who was shot in the chest and arm was in stable condition. Their names were not released.

Given the continuing protests against seen Police abuses, this is an indication that we need to also be showing our support for Police.  Our Police need to be of the People, for the People and by the People.  Our People need to educate their children to be respectful of Police and to be supportive of Police.  Our Police need to be respectful of the People they serve, even the scummy ones.  US Marine General James Mattis puts it well—"Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet."  On the other hand, we expect soldiers, and should expect police, to take risks to ensure the safety of our civilians.

And, at the end of the day we need to thank each policeman we meet for his or her work to keep us safe.
