Aircraft have a useful life and then the airframe starts to get tired (fatigue or corrosion). At that point it is time to stop flying the aircraft--if you can. In the US military the biggest concern is the KC-135, the bulk of the US Air Force aerial tanker fleet. While we have been assured things are under control, at some point we will have to replace those hundreds of tankers.
The same problem applies to those airliners that we fly on. They eventually need to be retired. Here is an innovative idea for tired Boeing 747s. This article from Wired talks about converting one such 747 into a hostel outside of the Stockholm (Sweden) Airport.
