The EU

Google says the EU requires a notice of cookie use (by Google) and says they have posted a notice. I don't see it. If cookies bother you, go elsewhere. If the EU bothers you, emigrate. If you live outside the EU, don't go there.

Which Way Turkey?

Here is Columnist Mark Steyn on where Turkey is going.

The direction of Turkey is, in Mr Steyn's opinion, away from the secular Kemalist approach of almost a century and toward a more Islamist view of the world.

I believe that this was not inevitable.  I believe the rejection of Turkey by the EU was a major factor here.

We reap what we sow.

Don't discount everything Israel is now doing to force government-destabilizing public condemnation of the Gaza situation. Neo-con policy creates its own world, where rhetoric becomes true because it's made to become so via violence and associated saber-rattling. It's galling that anyone would try to take credit for prescience in such situations (i.e. "I TOLD you Palestinian supporters are violent", when it's a result of decades of violent abuse against civilians).

King George's folks all thought similar things about their policies to handle misbehavior in Boston in the 1770's. Who would have thought that a dozen other colonies would think themselves best advised to respond en masse? Who would now think that Muslim states might similarly think themselves collectively threatened?

I'd hate to be a politician in Turkey right now who ever voted in favor of cooperation with Israel. I'm thinking my incumbency would be worth just about the same as the prospects for liberty of a 25-year old Palestinian child born in Gaza.
