A Fuzzy Picture

The Democrats in Congress often have a hard time supporting our Middle East ally, Israel.  And,they have no solutions to bring peace for all.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

The congresswoman demanded to know if the US had any hand in the attack.

From The Blaze, by BLAZE NEWS, 18 September 2024.

Here is the lede plus three:

Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York offered a bizarre response to the astounding pager attack on members of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

While many praised the ingenuity and precision of the attack on the terror group, Ocasio-Cortez issued a demand for assurance that the U.S. didn't provide any assistance to the operation.

"Israel’s pager attack in Lebanon detonated thousands of handheld devices across of a slew of public spaces, seriously injuring and killing innocent civilians," she wrote in a post on social media.

"This attack clearly and unequivocally violates international humanitarian law and undermines US efforts to prevent a wider conflict," Ocasio-Cortez added. "Congress needs a full accounting of the attack, including an answer from the State Department as to whether any US assistance went into the development or deployment of this technology."

Were civilians injured or killed in this event?  I am sure there were.  But, how?  The carelessness of the Hezbollah targets, the "soldiers" of a terrorist organization?  Likely.  Say a Hezbollah terrorist giving his pager to a young neice to play with.  Being careless often has consequences.

I suspect Representative Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is just looking for reasons to whinge against Israel.  I wonder if she is one of those "river to the sea" types, who has no ideas what to do with eight million Israelis who would be displaced by her desired solution?

Offer Revoked

For John, BLUFThe Department of Defense seems to be in administrative chaos.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III assumed direct oversight of the case and effectively put the death penalty back on the table.

From The Old Gray Lady, by Reporter Carol Rosenberg, Reporting from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, 2 August 2024, Updated 8:41 p.m. ET.

Here is the lede plus three:

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III on Friday overruled the overseer of the war court at Guantánamo Bay and revoked a plea agreement reached earlier this week with the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and two alleged accomplices.

The Pentagon announced the decision with the release of a memorandum relieving the senior official at the Defense Department responsible for military commissions of her oversight of the capital case against Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and his alleged accomplices for the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, at the Pentagon and in a Pennsylvania field.

The overseer, retired Brig. Gen. Susan K. Escallier, signed a pretrial agreement on Wednesday with Mr. Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi that exchanged guilty pleas for sentences of at most life in prison. In taking away the authority, Mr. Austin assumed direct oversight of the case and canceled the agreement, effectively reinstating it as a death-penalty case. He left Ms. Escallier in the role of oversight of Guantánamo’s other cases.

Because of the stakes involved, the “responsibility for such a decision should rest with me,” Mr. Austin said in an order released Friday night by the Pentagon.

This is embarrassing.  Why did SecDef Lloyd Austin not knonw about this before it went public.  This suggests very poor staffing.

The other side of this is that given an offer was made, and accpeted, and should it not have been peremptorily revoked?  It strikes me as going against our tradition of English Common Law.  I will ask a lawyer .

The Attack

For John, BLUFThe possibility of a future terroist attack in these United States, sponsored by a foreign regime.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

The Attack

Author:  Kurt Schlichter
Kindle Version:  353 Pages
Publisher:  Kurt Schlichter
Language:  English
ASIN:  B0CR1N7R8T
Publication Date:  January 8, 2024

Mr Kurt Schlichter has combined current events, such as our open border and terrorist attacks in places like Russia, stirred with his imagination and produced a very believeable story about a terrorist attack on the United States in the not-too-distant future (27-29 August 2024).

I liked the author's approach to the book, writing what are 40 short stories, from interviews with different observers of the various terrorist attacks.  Each one smoothly fits into a believeable collection that gives the reader an overview of what could be in our future.

The book actually takes a positive view of a terrible situation, showing how the resilience of the American People help to keep the situation from being worse than it is.  The book also paints a positive view as to the political response on the part of the Government.

Set at a point several years in the future, the book gives its interviewees time to settle down and absorb the events of August 2024, and to draw informed conclusions,  It is for the reader to also draw informed conclusions and to reach out to elected leaders, and those they appoint, to take actions now so this does not happen in the future.  We all remember the attacks on 9/11.  We would not wish to see a repeat of that event, but with many more casualties and much more damage to our infrastructure.

This book is exciting to read, but should be read most importantly because it raises questions about what could happen to us in the future and which we might be able to prevent by actions today.

Yes, this is a self-published book.

Acts of Stupidity

For John, BLUFSome people need to read Dale Carnegie's classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From PJ ?media, by Stephen Kruiser, 11 October 2023.

Here is the lede plus two:

As we have discussed here a few times, Democrats often struggle with identifying who the real bad guys are in a conflict. Sure, they had a moment of clarity after 9/11, but that was all too fleeting. They have spent most of the two-plus decades since running interference or being flat-out apologists for anyone with a suicide vest.

For the longest time, the Democrats at least managed to keep the most virulent anti-Semitic voices among them out of national office. When Minnesota sent Keith Ellison to Congress in 2007, he would at least try to be coy about his true feelings. Then Ellison was succeeded by Ilhan Omar, and all Squad hell broke loose.

The second month she was in office, Omar began letting her anti-Semitic, anti-Israel freak flag fly. By the next month, Omar had stepped in it so much that then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi knew that she had to address it. Granny Boxwine didn’t have the fortitude to directly admonish Omar for some reason, and instead issued a general condemnation of anti-Semitism that felt as sincere as a drunken declaration of love during a wedding at the Elvis chapel in Vegas.

I am all for differences of opinion, but the situation in Israel, with wanton slaughter of unarmed civilians would, I would think, cause right thinking people to condemn the action.  Condemn the example of political action.  Elicit responses condemning this kind of terrorism.

As for the Black Lives Matter Chicago posting a picture supporting the Palistinian attack (one of the parachute attackers), it is disturbibg.  It also draws a line between them and the rest of this nation, this world.  It says those not like us are targets.  Many of those killed and kidnaped were at an event for peace.  Those were the enemy?  Propaganda should be subtle, not a blunt instrument that harms friends and neutrals as well as opponents.

With all due respect to the CBC, to not call it what it is, a political act of terrorism, designed to effect change in a political situation is not mere ignorance, but disrespectful to the victims and a sign of side taking.

Hamas Overreach?

For John, BLUFTerrorism is a blunt instrument and Hamas has made more blunt than usual.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From Steyn on Line, by by Mark Steyn, 8 October 2023.

Here is the lede plus one:

In our initial report on this new war yesterday, we published a video showing a terrified young lady being abducted by Hamas "soldiers" from an Israeli music festival.  She was delivered to Gaza.  This is the condition she arrived in:
Paul Golding
@GoldingBF
WARNING GRAPHIC:  Palestinians strip the corpse of an Israeli woman, put it on display and desecrate it while shouting ‘Allah Akbar’.
Hamas and Israel are now at war.
"Allahu Akbar!"  Because Allah is truly great, isn't he?  He let us target the Jewess, and then strip her and beat her and rape her.  And then, when we drive what's left to the dar al-Islam, we all get to dance in the streets and desecrate her corpse.  Boy, what a generous guy that Allah is!

The infidel has a name:  Shana Louk, a citizen of Germany visiting Israel to attend a "Festival for Peace".  It didn't work out that way:

The purpose of terrorism is to mke life so miserable the other side will gldly grant political concessions..  It would appear that Hamas is working at that, hard.  The questiono is, will they succeed, or will they generate more resistance.  I could be wrong, but OI think they crossed thst magic political line.  Their supporters will say they are just resisting colonialism.  Their oponentd eill say that they have gone from moral patriots to barbaarians.

There are a couple of points that re key.  OOne is the ability of Hamas to generate international support.  Another will be the skill of the Israeli military to winkle out the Hamas fighters without ecess collateral damage.  Another will be the steady hand of Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu.  Finally, there is the question of how Iran will play its hand.

The Terror Threat this Year

For John, BLUFIntelligence Agencies are now loooking out and seeing terrorists threats to the US and Europe emerging in Afghanistan.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

‘They can do an external operation against U.S. or Western interests abroad in under six months with little to no warning,’ says the Army general in charge of regional operations.

From US News and World Report, by Reporter Paul D. Shinkman, 16 March 2023.

Here is the lede plus four:

The Islamic State group branch in Afghanistan will be able to conduct terrorist attacks in Europe and Asia within six months, the top U.S. officer for operations in the region told Congress on Thursday.

“They can do an external operation against U.S. or Western interests abroad in under six months with little to no warning,” Army Gen. Michael Kurilla, the head of U.S. Central Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

The general later specified that the group known as ISIS-Khorasan or ISIS-K could potentially conduct attacks in Asia or in Europe. It will have greater difficulty attacking the U.S. homeland directly, he said in response to questions.

U.S. intelligence offered a similar assessment of ISIS-K’s ability to attack the U.S. in October 2021.

The potential threat posed by the group, whose brutal acts became more prolific in the final years of the U.S. involvement in the conflict, has become a renewed matter of attention as lawmakers scrutinize the extent the U.S. can still conduct counter-terror operations in Afghanistan after fully withdrawing from it.

Som 20 years and 2429 US Dead (and 46,319 Afghan civilians dead) we are six months away from a potential terrorist event on our soil.  This does not smack of a successful outcome.  It will be worse if there is a terrorist event in the near future.

A planning question for both the Department of State and the Department of Defense is what should be our reaction to a terrorist event out of Afghanistan?  Included in that should be the White House National Security Advior (Jake Sullivan)  Some prior planning will tend to suppress hairbrain ideas thrown on the table at the last minute.

Ms Clinton equates Pro-Life with Terrorism

For John, BLUFI think Senator Clinton just got carried away with her rhetoric; at least I hope that is the case.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From , by Reporter Catherine Salgado, 27 December 2022, 4:06 PM.

Here is the lede plus one:

Iranian protests against oppressive, misogynistic laws have led to over 14,000 arrests and a government decision to execute an unknown number of protestors.  Afghanistan’s ruling power, the terrorist Taliban, murders, rapes, and abuses women on a daily basis.  Russian soldiers reportedly weaponized rape in Ukraine.  All of which, in Hillary Clinton’s mind, is equivalent to Arkansas’s pro-life legislation restricting the abortion of innocent unborn babies.

Most of us did a double take on that, but not PBS’s Christiane Amanpour.  When failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton went on Amanpour and Company to discuss the women’s rights summit the Clinton Presidential Center is hosting, Amanpour didn’t seem disturbed by Hillary equating the saving of unborn babies with raping and shooting women, according to LifeNews.

Amanpour asked Clinton about the “unfinished business” of women’s rights, and Hillary knew exactly which countries to bash.  “But we are also in a period of time where there is a lot of pushback and much of the progress that has been, I think, taken for granted by too many people is under attack,” Clinton pontificated. “Literally under attack in places like Iran or Afghanistan or Ukraine, where rape is a tactic of war, or under attacks by political and cultural forces in a country like our own when it comes to women’s health care and bodily autonomy.”  Because pro-lifers are so similar to the Taliban!

We don't really think that Senator Clinton equates Pro-Life people with Terrorists, do we?  That would be equating criminal activity with the right of the State to protect, at some point, the life of an unborn child for the convenience of the Mother carrying the child.  That seems like an unbalanced argument.

In our pluralistic society it does not seem unreasonable to allow abortion to save the life of the Mother, or, early on, in the event of rape.  Incest as a separate category ignores that it is usully rape, and when it is consenual the idea of abortion sounds more like eugenics.  At some point the child conceived should begin to gather his or her own rights.

Terror in the Synagogue

For John, BLUFA few years back I gave a "Tactical Pen" to a woman I was working with who was the member of a synagogue.  I hope she never has to consider using it.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From InstaPundit, Professor Glenn Reynolds, 17 January 2022, 11:10 PM.

Here is the Tweet Referenced:

Rising serpent 🇺🇸

@rising_serpent

A day later & nobody in the media is asking how a foreign terrorist entered the country, procured an illegal firearm & held up a synagogue without help and why he was killed when he wasn't holding hostages and why the FBI can figure out school parents motives faster than his.

It raises a fair question.  I was impressed with the rapid response by the FBI Team from Quantico, Virginia.

However, we wonder How did this happen, and why didn't the Home Office stop his travel and why didn't Immigration turn him back at JFK and how did he get from NYC to Texas?

Violence Against Politicians

For John, BLUFIs AntiFa a global organization, like Communism, or is it a bunch of individual organiations, each doing its own thing?  In other worse, does the AntiFa in Portland pretty much agree wiht the AntiFa in Germany?  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

Antifa far-left extremists have called for the murder of 53 members of the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD), publishing their home addresses on a well-known far-left web platform.

from Breitbaart, by Reporter Chris Tomlinson, 2 October 2021.

Here is the lede plus two:

The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) confirmed the existence of the posts, which were made on Indymedia, the far-left web platform which has been used in the past to post credit for far-left attacks and other calls for violence against the AfD.

The BKA confirmed to German magazine Focus that several posts made on September 13th had called for violence against the populist party, with one saying: “Let’s kill the AfD pigs with explosives.”

A Google search cache seen by Breitbart London confirms the existence of the posts on Indymedia, but the articles have been either deleted or moved, as a message states “access denied” when attempting to view the page.

I know the Democrats lost the Congressional Baseball Game this year, a charity event, but this seems like a bit of an extreme reaction.

Mr James Hodgkinson, of Belleville, Illinois, the shooter on 14 June 2017, was a one off.  That said, it is the worst act of terrorism against Congress since the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party shot up Congress on 1 March 1954, wounding five CongressCritters.

Isn't it time for Progressives to come out and condemn this kind of AntiFa talk?  Killing Politicians is not necessarily a value free action.  Others will likely be hurt.  Are we so obsessed with the "right" that we see it as a free fire zone?  I hope not. Hat tip to the InstaPundit.

Regards  —  Cliff

It is interesting to me that the vaunted Wikipedia does not hve an entry for Mr Hodgkinson, although they do mention him in their entry for the Congressional Baseball shooting itself.  Why?  I wonder.  Is it because Mr Hodgkinson was a "Bernie Bro"?  Is it because it flows counter to the theme that the problem is terrorism on the right?

Free to Express Your View

For John, BLUFDifferent people see 9/11 through different lenses.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The College Fix, by the Staff, 11 September 2021.

Here is the lede plus four:

A student senator at Washington University in St. Louis was nabbed red-handed removing American flags from a 9/11 memorial on this day of tribute.

According to The New Guard, a member of the WashU College Republicans recorded Fadel Alkilani carrying trash bags full of the flags he had just yanked.

Alkilani told the person filming that the memorial was “in violation of school rules” and he “expressed no remorse” for his actions.

When the Young America’s Foundation contacted Alkilani about the incident, he told the group “I did not violate any university or legal policy.  Now go away.”

The senator said in a now-protected tweet that he plucked the flags as a “protest against American imperialism and the 900,000 lives lost as a result of post 9/11 war.”

I am sure that Washington University Student Senator Fadel Alkilani is one American who is a celebrant of the First Amendment.  And he is right to be so.  On the other hand, pulling up someone else's tribute to the dead on 9/11 seems a little narrow.

All that said, I wonder from where he gets the "900,000 lives lost".  Yes, lives lost, but that seems like a miscount.  And I wonder where on the ledger he puts the Yazidis.  And other minority groups?  And what he thinks of the ravanchism within Islam, and how much space should be allow for it?  And what he thinks of Charlie Hebdo?

I do think yanking up US Flags at a memorial for 9/11 victims does seem tacky.

Look For the Briefcase

For John, BLUFI think there is an assumption out there that all European descendents are racist, an assumption that ignores history and the prejudice against immigrants from Ireland, or France, or Poland, or Italy or ....  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

Bigotry in the Sky

From An Injustice!, by Ms Roz Warren, 26 August 2021.

Here is the lede plus one:

I’d just boarded my plane from Philadelphia to California. When you travel alone, sitting on a plane always is a lottery. Would the person sitting next to me be pleasant and friendly? An obnoxious drunk? A motormouth? A jerk who’d assault the first flight attendant who insisted they wear a mask?

This was going to be a six-hour flight and I was hoping for somebody pleasant and low-key. No demands and no drama.

I was in luck. When I got to row 20, I saw that the fellow in the middle seat was a friendly smiling man in his fifties. A woman who I assumed was his wife — they’d lowered the armrest between them — sat beside him in the window seat.

As I sat down and settled into my aisle seat, the man gave me a welcoming smile. “I’m so glad you’re sitting here,” he told me.

That seemed a little much. Was he being flirty? No, I decided. Not only was he at least a decade younger than me, but his wife was sitting right there. Maybe he was just a really friendly guy?

“Thank you,” I replied.

“I was scared it would be the guy with the turban,” he explained. “When I saw him in the boarding lounge, I was really hoping he wouldn’t sit near us.”

She nailed him.  A White racist.  There is not a shred of doubt in her mind.  There is no exploration of her interloctor's personal trauma.  No specuation that he might have lost an older Brother or Father on 9/11.

My first complaint is that the guy in the next seat isn't "White".  He is a Caucasian.

My second point is that as we approach the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States some are alert to the possibility of a repeat of that terrorist event.  Frankly, the vast majority of Muslims walking around in your City, and mine, are just like the rest of us.  They are just more Caucasians, or Blacks, or Asians, trying to have a good day, a good week, a good year.  There is a fringe in their Community who wish to change the world, by violence if needs be.  Is this not true?  And, there are fringes in other communities, but they tend to blend in and not be noticed, like real "White Suppressicists".

If one is not looking around and paying attention one is living in a fog.  One needs to know where the exits are, not just on the airliner.  One needs to note anyone who looks like they don't belong.  One should be suspicious of packages or briefcases that seem to be abandoned.  When I was at Staff College, in the United Kingdom, one of our sister Colleges had a bombing that killed one person.

We shouldn't be paranoid, which would ruin the beauty of life, but we need to be aware.  One the other hand, we shouldn't have our head in the sand, as does, it appears, our Author.  She apparently has not read many history books, or perhaps only those by Mr Zinn.  Lost in school is that an expansive Islam made it to tours in France and the Gates of Vienna, in Austria.

And, we shouldn't assume everyone with a slightly different view is a racist.  We are in this with them.  We should be willing to exchange views.  Perhaps everyone will learn something.

Show Tolerance, It is Our Best Side

For John, BLUFThis is a call for tolerance, but with a certain degree of historic misapprehension.  But, the important point is a call for tolerance.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The Boston Globe, by Correspondent Mitchell Zuckoff, 4 September 2021, 4:04 pm.

Here is the lede plus:

The 20th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor came and went with little fanfare.

. . .

Editorial writers reflected on how much had changed — for the better — since the cataclysmic event that launched the United States into World War II.

“[A]s the first shock waves spread over America, it would have been hard for us to believe in the future that is now the present.  It would have been hard for us to believe that those who were our enemies … are now our friends.  But so it is,” The New York Times editorialized on Dec. 7, 1961.

“The old hates are dead,” it continued.  “We gain little by new hates.  On this day of memories there is no value in resentments against whole peoples.”

. . .

Yet something profound had changed over the previous 20 years:  Although Pearl Harbor remained a deep wound in the national psyche, it had been allowed to heal.

What a difference from today, as we approach the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 — day one of a war on terror that would not pause, much less end.

I’ve been living with 9/11 since the day itself, when I wrote the lead story about the attacks for this newspaper with help from numerous colleagues.  Later, for a book, I spent years listening to, and sometimes crying with, hundreds of survivors, victims’ family members, heroic responders, military and government officials, witnesses, and others, many still scarred physically and emotionally.

The theme is in the Headline.  Let us refuse to succumb to hate.  I am in full agreement.  Nothing good will come from hating, including hating the Taliban or other groups in the Middle East or South Asia.  Thank you Reporter Zuckoff and Mr Jack Grandcolas, who lost his Wife and unborn child on Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania on 9/11.

There are very real differences between Pearl Harbor and 9/11.  For one thing, we defeated Japan, and Germany and Italy.  Those three nations changed and adopted values such as democracy.  They became our allies.  Nothing like that has happened with the groups of Muslim intent upon spreading their faith across the face of the earth.

When we think about the conflict between aggressive Islam, such as al Qaeda and ISIS, and non-Islamic nations, we should consider that this conflict has been going on for over a thousand years.  That conflict has seen successes for the West, such as 732 (Battle of Tours), 1492 (Expulsion of Moors from Spain) and 1683 (Siege of Vienna).  On the other hand, aggressive Islamic forces, in the early days, swept through Egypt and across the Maghreb.  And, Constantinople fell in 1453, becoming Istanbul.

While some in the West wave the flag of Islamophobia, the fact remains that there is a strain of Islam that would convert the world by the sword.  An example I would think Reporter Zuckoff would be familiar with would be the attack on the offices of the publication Charlie Hebdo.

Does there have to be emnity between the West and Islam?  Absolutely not.  We have good relations with many nations from the Islamic world.  For example, we have good relations with Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.  On the other hand, we are fighting Islamic groups in a number of areas, from Africa to Asia.  And, at home.

It is a difficult path we have to tread.  We must resist efforts of Islamists to impose Shira Law on the rest of us.  At the same time, we owe it to our fellow Americans, our fellow Westerners, to be open to them as fellow believers in Democracy, regardless of their religious faith.

As for our current imbroglio, withdrawing American Citizens and our friends and supporters from Afghanistan, we are in a pickle.  The Taliban holds the good cards.  We must work with them.  And I would like to think they see an advantage in working with us.  However, if it goes South, then we must be ready to act decisively to save lives.  But, we should do it without hate for our enemy, nor for Americans who share the same faith as those who are our enemy.  Those Americans share a faith in this nation and in their fellow Americans.  As Boston Globe Columnist Jeff Jacoby put it in today's Opinion Piece, "Since 9/11, Americans have embraced their Muslim neighbors", we have good relations in these United States.  We should keep them.

Another thing we need to do, as Americans, is seek the truth and avoid overheated political rhetoric.  I thought Mr Zuckoff's swipe at those who went to our nation's Capitol on 6 January, wrong as they were in their actions, was such an overheated piece of political rhetoric.  The line "That gulf remains deep even after red hatters achieved what the thwarted hijackers of United Airlines Flight 93 couldn’t on 9/11: visiting death and destruction on the US capital." left a lot to be desired, especially given that the only deliberate death was of an unarmed protestor by an armed Capitol Police Lieutenant.  He is lucky it wasn't in Kansas.  The line probably looked good at the time, but it flows against the theme.

Regards  —  Cliff

In the case of Saudi Arabia the leadership is working to liberalize its approach to government, without allowing extremists on either side to take down the Government, resulting in pushback from Progressive groups in the United States.

For example, we support African nations resisting the predations of Boko Haram, including kidnapping young girls and disrupting schools.

For example, if the Taliban, or some group operating in the shelter of their wing, elects to begin mass executions.

The War Continues

For John, BLUFThis war has been going on for some 1350 years.  Why would it end now?  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

The Afghan debacle just marks a new, more murderous phase

From The Washington Free Beacon, by Columnist Matthew Continetti, 20 August 2021, 5:00 am.

Here is the lede plus two:

"I'm now the fourth American president to preside over war in Afghanistan—two Democrats and two Republicans," President Biden said during his speech on August 16.  "I will not pass this responsibly on— responsibility on to a fifth president."  He needn't have corrected himself.  He did indeed irresponsibly bequeath to his successor a terrible situation in central Asia.

The best-case scenario, according to Biden, would look like this:  Afghanistan's reversion to Islamofascism fades from the international headlines.  The Taliban understands that its continued rule depends on its ability to prevent terrorists from launching attacks from its territory.  America goes back to fighting over masks and vaccinations and "building back better," or whatever.

But the best-case scenario is an illusion.  Why?  Because the war isn't over.  Afghanistan is just one front in a global conflict that the United States did not initiate and cannot wish away.  The Cold War did not end when the South Vietnamese government collapsed. Nor will the war on terror or the "Long War" or the "Forever War" cease with Taliban control of Afghanistan.  When participants in the worldwide Salafist-jihadist movement look at the developments of the last week, they don't see reasons to quit their mayhem.  They see the chaos, panic, violence, disorder, and American retreat as a vindication of their ideology and a spur to further action.

The path forward is open to discussion, but the fact of militant Islamic groups working to achieve a worldwide umma should not be ignored.  Not all Muslims, or even most, but some.

This is not like the American Civil War.  When General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse on 9 April 1965 he was out of the war and became a loyal US Citizen again.  Yes, there were some holdouts and the KKK, but the war was basically over.  World War II ended with the surrender of Italy, and then Germany and then Japan.  It is not the same with the various Islamic jihadi groups.  Stand by and be alert.

What Should Congresscritters Do?

For John, BLUFThe Boston Herald seems to have lost its rudder, at least judging by this item from Mr Joe Battenfeld.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

If Seth Moulton thought he was unpopular before, he may be in for a shock.

From The Boston Herald, by Newspaperman Joe Battenfeld, 26 August 2021.

Here is the lede plus one:

The Massachusetts congressman, previously best known for his failed presidential campaign and failed coup of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, now has another venture to live down — a secret, unauthorized trip to Afghanistan that has enraged the Biden administration, Pelosi and other Democrats.

Hey, if the shoe fits.

Moulton has a well-earned reputation as grandstanding and egotistical, and hasn’t shied away from the cable TV spotlight, speaking frequently from his position as a Marine and Iraq War veteran on foreign policy and war — even when his views differ from his party.  Contrast Moulton to another war veteran in the Massachusetts delegation, Rep. Jake Auchincloss.

And on it goes.  What a cynical, sarcastic look at part of our State's DC Delegation.  The Congressman did what needed to be done.  And he wasn't alone.  He was partnered up with Rep Peter Meijer, Republican of Michigan.  If the last name, Meijer, doesn't ring a bell, think the DeMoulas family of the Midwest.

While President Biden, aided and abetted by Vice PresidentWatren and Speaker Pelosi, has tried to put a nice gloss on this train wreck of a rescue operation in Afghanistan, Reps Moultons and Meijer acted like Congressmen and went to see what was really going on.

I met Rep Moulton a few years back.  Dr Janet Breslin-Smith and I were trying to round up someone in the House to pick up the mantel of recently retired Rep Ike Skelton who had maintained an overwatch of Professional Military Education.  Congressman Moulton turned us down, but he was professional and understood our issues.

Thank you Congressmen Moutlin and Meijer.

As for Newspaperman Battenfelt, he leaves a lot to be desired.

Mindless

For John, BLUFI would like to see US Main Stream Media explain the juxtaposition.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

The InstaPundit Blog Post is by Author Ed Driscoll, 16 August 2021, 2:22pm.  The author of the linked article at Out Kick is Mr Joe Kinsey, 16 August 2021.

Here is the lede from the linked article:

We’re currently living in a world where a Taliban spokesperson is allowed to give operational updates in Afghanistan via a Twitter account that is being cited by mainstream news outlets from around the world, while Donald Trump’s account remains suspended.
Is former President Donal Trump really that much of a threat to the American People, or to the would, that he should be suspended, but the Taliban are OK.  I am listening to President Biden talking about the threat of terrorism.  He makes the case that terrorism is a threat.  Yet we quivver at the thought of Donald Trump on Twitter.  Sad.

Boko Haram Kills in the Name of God

For John, BLUFNationhood requires a degree of unity, something Nigeria struggles with.  Boko Haram, a terrorist group, infamous for kidnapping school girls, is not willing to compromise for national unity.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

A Nigerian archbishop has decried the slaughter of Christians in his country and the media silence surrounding it, declaring that “Christians are being killed like chickens.”

This is from last year, but Boko Haram is still out there, enforcing its view of God by killing those who do not agree with them.

From 30 April 2019, in Breitbart, by Mr Thomas D Williams, PhD.

Here is the lede plus four:

Archbishop Matthew Man-oso Ndagoso told LifeSiteNews said that in the Muslim-dominated northwest of the country people live in constant fear, especially in the state of Kaduna where he resides.

“It is one of the states where everybody walks around afraid.  There are kidnappers and bandits and they are killing people.  Villages are being burned down,” Archbishop Ndagoso said in an article published Monday.

“In other parts of the country if something happens, the president shows up. But here people are being killed and nothing is being done about it,” he said.

Ndagoso says there is “a systemic persecution of Christians in these states” but the nation’s leaders “do not have the political will to address the issues, to enforce the provisions of the constitution regarding the equality of religions and the equality of citizens before the law.”

Since last October, the archbishop says, “there have been serious attacks in villages especially in my archdiocese of Kaduna.  Hundreds and hundreds of villagers have been killed.”

The term Boko Harem is usually translated as "Western education is forbidden".

It is one thing to think that everyone else's vision of God a flawed.  It is another to slaughter such people for their supposed error.  This is the kind of ideology which should not be allowed to spread.  But, it must be treated as a criminal activity, as it is, what with depriving others of their lives (civil rights), without conviction in a court of law.  If their law, in territory they control, allows it, it is one thing.  It is another to use force of arms to expand that territory.

Cameroon is not the only African nation with persecution.

Not All Immigrants Are Equal

For John, BLUFThe issue of illegal immigrants has been with us for ever, and isn't getting fixed.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From The Lid, by Reporters Faye Higbee and Jeff Dunetz, 24 January 2020.

Here is the lede plus three:

Tell me again how we don’t need to do a better job regulating who and how people come into this country.

The latest example that should scare the heck out of you happened in the great state of Texas. While our legislators were concentrating on a fake impeachment trial, three Syrians nationals were arrested in Dallas had counterfeit Colombian passports.  That was the good part.  They are allegedly linked to Al-Qaeda and supposedly entered the US at Dallas, Texas.  The report appears a bit sketchy at this time, due to some differences in who reported what.  None of the reports state precisely where the men were arrested,al-Qaeda Syrians.

The three Stooges, I mean three Syrian nationals, first raised the suspicions of the American authorities when they applied for travel visas from Colombia, as their suspicious documents gave them away.  These potential terrorists were not too smart.  The American authorities detected a fraud when the fake passports’ birth dates failed to match up with the identification numbers used by the Colombian government.

Per Colombian reporter, Luis Carlos Vélez published images of the counterfeit passports on Twitter (below), noting that the men got into Colombia through the La Guajira border crossing with Venezuela.

The inability of the US Congress to come up with effective legislation, to help us screen out the terrorists from the vast crowd of legal immigrant and asylum seekers is breathtaking and appalling.  One hopes that our local Congresswoman, Lori Trahan, soon gets a handle on it.

Trump's Next Move

For John, BLUFThe future is not written in stone.  And bullies need to be resisted.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Here is the sub-headline:

Officials said there have been no reports of American casualties at this time.

From ABC News, by Reporters Luis Martinez and Elizabeth McLaughlin, 7 January 2020.

Here is the lede plus one:

Iran fired multiple missiles into Iraq on Tuesday evening, targeting U.S. military sites in what appeared to be retaliation for the recent American drone strike that killed one of its top generals.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps swiftly took credit, and one Iranian politician tweeted his nation’s flag -- an apparent swipe at President Donald Trump who tweeted the American flag after the U.S. killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

So where does it go from here?  This could be the opening act of a worse future, as suggested by The Daily Beast Yesterday ("The Nuclear Threats From Iran and North Korea, Working Together, Grow by the Day").  The sub-headline is "By blowing away Soleimani, Trump wanted to show he is not a paper tiger. But his “disproportionate” actions may push North Korea and Iran to step up nuclear cooperation."

One problem with this view is that it ignores several decades of history, including Iranian fomenting of conflict over the last two decades, and efforts at nuclear weapons development.  It includes North Korean acts of overseas assassinations and their sinking of a South Korean warship.  Then there is the North Korean shelling of South Korean Islands.

There is an alternative future.  It is possible the leadership of both Iran and North Korea will recognize there are limits to their bullying behavior, coupled with a willingness on the part of the United States to engage in Live and Let Live.  We are hearing those kinds of words from the White House and Tehran.  There is hope.

Who Compares with the Late Quds Force Commander Qassim Soleimani

For John, BLUFThe targeted killing of Quds Force Commander Qassim Soleimani has caused Democrats to become excited about the actions of President Trump in defense of Americans.  I think they lack historic depth.  We have always had very bad people abusing fellow human beings.  Mr Soleimani is not unique.  And killing such people is not unique.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

SS-Gruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich was attacked on 27 May 1942, outside of Prague (Operation ANTHROPOID), by Czech Partisans, supported by the British Government.

This information is from the Heydrich Wikipedia page.

Heydrich wore many hats in the Third Reich, including President of the International Criminal Police Commission (later known as Interpol).  He was the founding head of the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD), an internal intelligence organization.  He helped organize Kristallnacht, a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938.  Upon his arrival in Prague, Heydrich sought to eliminate opposition to the Nazi occupation by suppressing Czech culture and deporting and executing members of the Czech resistance.  He was directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen, the special task forces that travelled in the wake of the German armies and murdered more than two million people by mass shooting and gassing, including 1.3 million Jews.  On 20 January 1942, Heydrich chaired a meeting, now called the Wannsee Conference, which formalized plans for the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question"—the deportation and genocide of all Jews in German-occupied Europe.

Here is Wikipedia on the assault on Heydrich:

In London, the Czechoslovak government-in-exile resolved to kill Heydrich.  Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík headed the team chosen for the operation, trained by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE).  They returned to the Protectorate, parachuting from a Handley Page Halifax on 28 December 1941, where they lived in hiding, preparing for the mission.

On 27 May 1942, Heydrich planned to meet Hitler in Berlin. German documents suggest that Hitler intended to transfer him to German-occupied France where the French resistance was gaining ground.  Heydrich would have to pass a section where the Dresden-Prague road merges with a road to the Troja Bridge.  The junction in the Prague suburb of Libeň was well suited for the attack because motorists have to slow for a hairpin bend.  As Heydrich's car slowed, Gabčík took aim with a Sten submachine gun, but it jammed and failed to fire.  Heydrich ordered his driver Klein to halt and attempted to confront the attackers, rather than having his driver speed away.  Kubiš then threw a converted anti-tank mine at the rear of the car as it stopped.  The explosion wounded both Heydrich and Kubiš. Heydrich ordered Klein to chase Gabčík on foot, and Gabčík shot Klein in the leg.  Kubiš and Gabčík managed to escape the scene.

A Czech woman went to Heydrich's aid and flagged down a delivery van.  He was placed on his stomach in the back of the van and taken to the emergency room at Bulovka Hospital.  He had suffered severe injuries to his left side, with major damage to his diaphragm, spleen, and one lung.  A splenectomy was performed, and the chest wound, left lung, and diaphragm were all debrided.  Himmler ordered Karl Gebhardt to fly to Prague to assume care.  Despite a fever, Heydrich's recovery appeared to progress well.  Hitler's personal doctor Theodor Morell suggested the use of the new antibacterial drug sulfonamide, but Gebhardt thought that Heydrich would recover and declined the suggestion.  Heydrich reconciled himself to his fate on 2 June, during a visit by Himmler, by reciting one of his father's operas:

The world is just a barrel-organ which the Lord God turns Himself.  We all have to dance to the tune which is already on the drum.
Heydrich slipped into a coma after Himmler's visit and never regained consciousness.  He died on 4 June; an autopsy concluded that he died of sepsis.

Funeral

After an elaborate funeral held in Prague on 7 June 1942, Heydrich's coffin was placed on a train to Berlin, where a second ceremony was held in the new Reich Chancellery on 9 June.  Himmler gave the eulogy.  Hitler attended and placed Heydrich's decorations—including the highest grade of the German Order, the Blood Order Medal, the Wound Badge in Gold, and the War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords—on his funeral pillow.  Although Heydrich's death was employed for pro-Reich propaganda, Hitler privately blamed Heydrich for his own death, through carelessness:

Since it is opportunity which makes not only the thief but also the assassin, such heroic gestures as driving in an open, unarmoured vehicle or walking about the streets unguarded are just damned stupidity, which serves the Fatherland not one whit.  That a man as irreplaceable as Heydrich should expose himself to unnecessary danger, I can only condemn as stupid and idiotic
Seems that they were both horrible people, from a civilization point of view.  Both seem to have felt that all is fair in war.  Both seem to feel that there was no action to base.

The difference is that Heydrich was internal until war broke out and then he operated in occupied territory.  In contrast, Qassim Soleimani operated a great guerrilla group across the Middle East, operating in the territory of other nations, including Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.  He seemed to feel free to poke at a number of additional nations, including Israel and Saudi Arabia.  He supported the idea of "Death to America" (and Israel).  And meant it.

It is always sad when a human dies.  However, this was a person who engaged in this killing, in a big way.

The Alternative View

For John, BLUFThe Democrats, in and out of Government, are saying that President Trump upset the stability in the Middle East, unleashing forces he neither recognizes nor can control.  It is a disaster, worse than the Johnstown Flood.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

From Arab News, by Ms Baria Alamuddin, 3 January 2020.

Here is an extracted paragraph plus one:

By killing Soleimani, the US has decapitated the principal agent of Tehran's strategy for regional hegemony, bringing an end to a long phase of Tehran-branded militancy dominated by the Quds Force commander personally.  No other global terrorist boasts Soleimani's longevity in overseeing thousands of paramilitary and terrorist attacks over at least four decades.  He lived by the sword and died a fitting death. His passing should not be mourned.

We are in uncharted territory.  How Tehran's regime chooses to respond in the coming days — either lashing out or withdrawing to lick its wounds — will have reverberations in the region for years to come.

This is one view and there are those who think it is rubbish, but it is a view and needs to be considered before we think we fully understand ongoing events.
