FRIDAY, APRIL 15TH
On Friday, the House will meet at 9:00 a.m. for legislative business. Last votes for the week are expected no later than 3:00 p.m.

Complete Consideration of H.Con.Res. __ - Establishing the budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2012 and setting forth appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2013 through 2021 (Subject to a Rule) (Sponsored by Rep. Paul Ryan / Budget Committee)
At least according to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.
Establishing the Budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2012 and setting forth appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2013 through 2021.
On the Democratic Party side this is about the kind of society we have grown to be and are becoming (Health Care Insurance reform, Planned Parenthood and NPR, cf., Senator Harry Reid).  On the Republican Party side it has become about saving the nation by getting the debt under control (e.g., Portugal).

I hope it will be an interesting and informative debate.

UPDATE:  Here is the Sissy Willis take, under the title "It's official.  I must now hate the Paul Ryan budget.  David Brooks is in luv with it".  And Here is a link to Rep Paul Ryan's video on his budget proposal.

They have settled on no Federal funding for abortions in DC apparently.

Can you see that both sides believe they and only they are "saving the nation", but that neither are?

I object to the Republicans' mean-spirited attacks on their pet nemeses (Planned Parenthood, NPR, public service unions, etc.) under the canard of "fiscal responsibility" without any flexibility of thought. Either savings are the goal, or they're not. Right now, alternate savings are never considered--it's destroy or scorch the earth in pursuit of destruction.

I also object to the Democrats slavish devotion to these and other "sacred cows" without any regard for how they will be financed. For them it's "I'd rather we all go down in an equitable boat full of holes than allow anyone to survive.

The net result is either that the Republicans destroy this country to save it, or the Democrats do the same.

I agee that both sides see themselves saving the nation.  Both can't be right, although both could be wrong.  I suspect both could, within their own vision, have errors.

It has never been about the parties.....it has always been about the people.....

"Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and gave him triumphal processions. ... Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the 'new, wonderful good society' which shall now be Rome's, interpreted to mean 'more money, more ease, more security, more living fatly at the expense of the industrious.'" --Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.)

Considering Cicero's observation, I'm thinking that for conservatism (as opposed to the GOP with is actually NEOCON) the Ryan plan is Check, if not Checkmate.

As for NPR and PP and the myriad other "social programs," these are things people should do or provide for themselves....not the government. You want an abortion, fine, write a check on your bank account and pay for it. I'll be more in favor of NPR when Talk Radio gets equal funding....or better, 103.3, The Oldies.

Time to tax the rich.

For the "lets tax those filthy rich people...or better....just confiscate their money, they probably stole it anyway" crowd,

Bill Whittle should get his own show in Vegas. Add a white tiger and a candelabra for props, and voila!

Though he'll sell more tickets in Branson, MO.

How about, since we are on planet Earth after all, we just go back to Clinton era rates?

Or we can reform the Tax Code.

Question: If the Ryan budget proposal is accepted, in full, will the debt ceiling ever be raised?

The debt, and it's reduction, is Job #1. So Ryan will ensure it will not grow further?

The problem is that everyone seems to focus on one single bullet as either the answer or the disaster.

Ryan's proposal is NOT the panacea. It is far from THE SILVER BULLET. It is a step...in the right direction.

Unfortunately however, for any step forward, there is a poor me entitlement mentality that claims that the rich (whoever THEY are...depends on what you make per annum I guess..for me, anyone over $100k is rich) OWE them some of their money. And thus, anything that impedes that cash flow....ANY cash flow...like a capped debt ceiling...will be reversed at the earliest possible opportunity.

So....we are going to bankrupt ourselves simply because of individual greed expressed through the laconic mouths of a bunch of politicians who are primarily out to butter their own bread. And we deserve precisely what we get.

Mandarin anyone? I personally am looking at rice recipes....

But...I am thinking I'll cook the rice somewhere else because in the good old Land of the Big BX....things are going to get very, very ugly and brutal very very soon. I find it interesting if not an astounding coincidence that we celebrate the civil war on the even of the second one.

We should fear the Chinese? Is every Chinese food restaurant a sleeper cell, now? I know, that's not what you mean, spouting your paranoia. You mean "them," the other Chinese. But then, how quickly do we move on to "Kill them all. Let God sort them out."?

There is no shame for those that would turn Americans against one another for cheap political gain.

Small minded politics will be the death of us, not the Chinese.

I haven't had time to check out the stuff at Iowa Hawk just yet.  I am still sorting out an off-line issue with the first Commenter over the guilt of Evangelicals in bringing about the UC Civil War.

I will say that Friday I finally heard a good reason for taxing C Corporations.  Given that they get their Money from us, by selling us, directly or indirectly, goods and services, and from pixey dust, the first part seemed to not make sense to tax, since it was just a complicated way of adding taxes to us, and in a relatively regressive way.  On the other hand, I have been all for taxing money flowing to corporations via pixey dust.

But, a friend of mine, a neo-liberal, agreed that Corporations have free speech rights, and thus, as "people" they should pay taxes.  So I now see it.

More later.

(As an aside, I liked it better when Bill Whittle called his presentations "After Burner", in keeping with the family name.)

Well, I agree with you Cliff at least to the extent that we should adopt some sort of simplified tax system where you get a balance sheet that has a heading, "This is what I earn." It applies to anyone (including corporations now that they have First Amendment rights). Then you go to a table and that is what you pay in taxes. No exemptions, no waivers. You make it, you pay it. Obviously, corporations will pay more than you will Cliff...or Jack...or Lance...or kad.....and WAAAAAAY more than me. But....it gets us by this "fair share" issue and actually defuses the dirty rich preying on the poor mantra. You may be rich, but you'll pay more. Nothing would make me happier than to see GE actually PAY some taxes.

In re China. I don't fear China. I've walked in the valley of the shadow of death, and not much scares me any longer. AND...I happen to love Chinese food so if there are sleeper cells there, I sure as you know what haven't seen them...well...aside from those of us who nod off on a MSG high.

I just don't want my Senator or Representative to have to fly to Beijing for legislative purposes.

In re turning Americans against one another, I suspect that has pretty much already happened given the economic situation and the realities of a geometrically growing deficit. The MSM and many, many politicians are promoting class warfare by claiming that the "rich" are screwing the poor. This is much like Tailgunner Joe and the boys calling someone a pinko commie and then claiming innocence when the guy gets run out of town on a rail. The REAL problem is one of simple avarice....the ones who have the gold like and want more. The ones who don't have the gold like and want the gold that the others have...and nobody will be happy even if they have it all. It's the American way.
