Mugged by Reality?

That is the view of Commentator Max Boot.  Writing in Commentary Magazine, speaking about foreign affairs, he asserts "Obama Has Been Mugged by Events".

Walking down dark alleys with dollar bills hanging out of your pockets carries a certain amount of personal responsibility for any potential muggings...

I guess I don't see the complete "neo-con" parallel, though. My understanding is that "neo-con" generally equates to "Zionist", and the "we have to tell the truth" segment of his speech repudiates a very important pillar of traditional neo-con foreign relations politics.

The more things change the more they stay the same. In spite of Obama's bravado, he is in the end a small voice in an ongoing drama of international proportions. First and foremost, the real amplification of "his" voice, and that of the entire Federal establishment of the Republic is to quit giving handouts to the same folks who consistently bite our hand. Consider the following record of UN support:
Kuwait votes against the United States 67% of the time
Qatar votes against the United States 67% of the time
Morocco votes against the United States 70% of the time
United Arab Emirates votes against the United States 70% of the time.
Jordan votes against the United States 71% of the time.
Tunisia votes against the United States 71% of the time.
Saudi Arabia votes against the United States 73% of the time.
Yemen votes against the United States 74% of the time.
Algeria votes against the United States 74% of the time.
Oman votes against the United States 74% of the time.
Sudan votes against the United States 75% of the time.
Pakistan votes against the United States 75% of the time.
Libya votes against the United States 76% of the time.
Egypt votes against the United States 79% of the time.
Lebanon votes against the United States 80% of the time.
India votes against the United States 81% of the time.
Syria votes against the United States 84% of the time.
Mauritania votes against the United States 87% of the time.

And yet we blindly, almost reflexively open our purse and hand them hard earned taxpayer dollars. For what? For their international support?

The clear message needs to be this: We don't care what season you Arabs are enjoying at the moment, you had better support us 100%, or the gravy train won't stop at your station any longer.

Yes....it is all about "quid pro quo." And we need to stop giving all our quid to the pro's.....

Re Kad's comment, I guess I don't see "neo-con" as equating with "Zionism", although neo-cons can be and tend to be pro-Israel.  I also tend to separate pro-Israeli from Zionist.  Maybe I am drawing too fine a line there.

I think the focus of Neoconservatism is on democracy and freedom and given that in the Middle East only Israel had that in times past there was a sort of symbiotic relationship.&nkbsp; But, the real neo-con hope was Iraq.  There were those who supported in invasion of Iraq as a way of bringing democracy to the Middle East.

Frankly, I still harbor hope for the long term survival of democracy in Iraq.  If you think there is democracy today in France and that it grew out of the French Revolution back in 1789, then you can have hope for Iraq.
