For John, BLUF: A Republican admits that a Democrat can help fix the fiscal crisis. Unfortunately, he has timed out of office. Nothing to see here; just move along.
From News Busters we have this short note on Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) saying on NBC's Meet the Press "If We Had a Clinton Presidency, We Would Have Fixed This Fiscal Mess By Now."
If we had a Clinton presidency, if we had Erskine Bowles chief-of-staff at the White House, or President of the United States, I think we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now. That's not the kind of presidency we're dealing with right now.Congressman Ryan isn't wrong here.
Both parties - forget about just the recent past - both parties got us to the mess we are in, this fiscal crisis, Republicans and Democrats. And you know what? It’s going to take both parties to solve this problem. That’s the kind of leadership we need today. And he isn't wrong there either.
And remember, President Bill Clinton, for part of his time in office, had to work with a Republican Congress and a Senate with a filibuster rule.

As susceptible as Willy Billy was to megalomania, he was not so pathologically narcissistic that he demanded that he be the "I" of the storm. Obama is so insecure and so angry that he can't stop the campaign aggression. In a second term, he continues to demand absolute agreement. Compromise is a semantic perversion as employed by Obama. To him, compromise is something done unilaterally by those who oppose him and his desires. His constant finger pointing at the Reps is not so much ideological as it is condemnatory. You won't do it MY way so you are being obstructionist and refusing to compromise (that is...."agree with me 100%). His olive branch is, "Do what I want, and I promise to take a look later at the things you want.......well.....if we get around to it."
Bill...for all his failings.....was a canny politician who GOT stuff done!!
I have long bemoaned the historically tragic capitulation of the Republican party to its lunatic "moralistic" fringes insisting upon obsession with Slick Willy's personal habits ahead of and to the total exclusion of consideration of and respect for his professional Presidential achievements. Indeed, the single greatest Federal financial era in my entire half-century-and-counting lifetime was his Presidency and coincident Republican Congress who, indeed, got stuff done. (Props to Neal for the phrase).
Erskine Bowles deserves more than a little credit, as suggested by the quote.
