Sexual Equality Question

Over at the Althouse blog we have a comment from Craig, regarding this post:
You can't be for equality and still demand to [be] allowed to hit from the ladies' tee.
Is Craig correct?  Is Craig being fair?

For sure, to me equality means young women register for the draft.

The fact that they call it the "ladies tee" is not an insignificant part of the problem. If the object of any particular game of golf is to fairly challenge yourself, then everyone ought to hit from where their ability suggests is best without regard to gender, and they ought to call it the "short-hitting tee" or something like that. If the object is to fairly compete with another player, then everyone has to hit from the same spot.

The Ladies Tee is not about the distance to the pin. We want to keep the divots to a manageable level.

Off to the dog house, I go.

Same rationale, Jack--the "beginner hacker tee" then. Tell me you wouldn't let Michelle Wie ride along in your cart.

Kad, I was about to take exception to your first comment, but your second comment brought me around.

My thought is that if someone is looking for a challenge, then just follow the rules, after all, you are just paying against yourself. If you feel the need for an equalizer, for sporting, betting, or bragging purposes, then handicap is the way to go. However, divot management is a fair concern regardless of gender.

The entire discussion of golf must be predicated on the knowledge that the reason that it is CALLED "golf" is that all the other four letter words were taken.

There have been occasional discussions about the "ladies tee" over the years from a "safety concern" perspective...it being in front of the "normal men's tee" and the "hypertestosterone tee." My wife was involved in one of those discussions and was asked if it didn't bother her hitting off of a tee in front of me. Her response was that being directly in front of me hitting on or off the tee was the safest place on the course.

One last comment, when one golfer says to another that he has a handicap.....it usually bears further questioning. Mine is that I use golf clubs.....
