A Waiting Period

From The Instupundit
PERSONALLY, I THINK A WAITING PERIOD FOR AN ABORTION is no more reasonable than a waiting period to buy a gun.
The link in the quote is a reference back to a blog post by Professor Althouse.

I think there is some certain logic there.

From a legal point of view, there indeed does have some constitutional concerns about waiting periods when it comes to abortion. I would love to have a waiting period myself, but these laws could amount to government harassment of a health provider.

I know when it comes to pro-life centers that aid to pregnant women, it has been found unconstitutional to make them consistently post signs/disclosures that they do not do abortions or even refer abortions out.

It's like bodily integrity rights of a woman, just as you can't force a woman to stay pregnant until a full-term gestation of the fetal development of her unborn child, the government can't force sterilization or contraception on a woman either.

When you buy a gun in the Dakotas, do they send you to a counsellor in Sioux Falls who thinks no one should have a gun?

Though I guess, other than the time to run the required background check so that we aren't selling guns to crazies and felons, I would support that the Constitution would be damaged by waiting periods for gun sales.

I think one of the important aspects of the law is that first the doctor performing the abortion speak to the woman face to face prior to the procedure, also separate from anyone that may have come with here in case of coercion. Usually the support system a woman has isn't their to support 'her decision' but to ensure that the abortion gets done.

Some women are threatened by parents that they won't help her out finish college, or by a husband/boyfriend with divorce or refusal of support.

I think Renee's point about a face-to-face is excellent.

Per Lance's comment, should we be doing a background check on auto purchases (or driver's licenses) to screen out the crazies?  (I expect that at some level of impairment the answer is yes.)
